The Living Room

Like every other room in the house, the POs went crazy with the pepto pink and the paneling in here.  The cheesy louvered doors between the living room and the sun room were tacky and small to begin with, but even so, they've seen better days, and we won't even mention the baby blue they used on the coat closet and the inside of the front door.

When the (pink) carpet was ripped out, there were, in fact, great old oak floors underneath, but said carpet was really there to disguise years of damage to the floors.  Someone let the main radiator under the front windows leak for so long that it rotted a hole right through to the basement.  There's a window directly below this hole and if you stand in just the right spot near the radiator, you can see out the basement window!

Under the back window, there are several feet of boards that are badly warped and splitting, requiring much strategic placement of furniture to ensure that bare feet don't end up full of splinters.  I can only guess that someone went on vacation at some point 30 years ago and left windows open from the extent of the damage.

One of the big questions that will have to be resolved at some point is whether the existing floors can be repaired, or if they'll need to be replaced entirely.   It looks as though the floor boards have been heavily sanded at least once or twice and there may not be enough life left in them to make it worth yet another sand and refinish.

But in the meantime, something had to be done to make the living room liveable.  Not being ready to deal with the consequences of removing the paneling in here just yet, my sister and I spent two days during her visit in August, 2002 eradicating the pink.  This is only an interim step to make it bearable, something I don't generally do, but as I don't expect to get to this room for at least a couple of years and I badly needed some respite from the pink, I let her talk me into it.

We spent two solid days priming and painting, consumed a number of adult beverages in the process, and then headed off to a local day spa for facials and pedicures.  We earned it!
