July 2004
Wow. How did I get here? I've now had various
and sundry contractors crawling all over my poor house since
March. Without cease. The carpenters have come and gone -
twice (the first set of painters wreaked
their havoc while the second round of carpentry was in progress), the
floor guy has done his magic - upstairs and downstairs, and I have a
(second) painter finishing up in the first floor sunroom as I write
this.
So, to sum up the progress made since March....
On the second floor:
- The 2nd Floor Sleeping Porch is now done:
7 new windows, sheetrock, insulation, a new bead board ceiling
(Ooooh! Ahhhh!!), new crown molding, great old pine floors sanded
and finished, 2 - count 'em - *2* doorways (with lovely french doors) now lead into the room - and best of all - IT'S NOT PINK ANYMORE!
- The Master Bedroom has a new ceiling, the massive gaping holes from last year's Fun With Knob & Tube are gone, the great old pine floors have been sanded and finished - and best of all - IT ISN'T PINK ANYMORE! (Of course, there are those who would say that my choice of color in this room is just as bad - but I like it, so who cares :-)
- The Cat Room has a new ceiling - and a new doorway, the last of The Evil Paneling has been (gleefully) removed, more massive gaping holes have been skillfully patched, the great old pine floors have been sanded and finished - and (can you say it with me?) - IT ISN'T PINK ANYMORE!
On the first floor:
- In the Living Room, the awful Fireplace mutilation has been remedied, new ceiling moldings, baseboards and door casings have been installed (for the lovely french doors
on either side of the new fireplace), the hideous coat closet was
demolished and rebuilt so that it no longer looks like an afterthought
that someone had after a few adult beverages, and we can't possibly
forget the lovely new 6-lite entry door (my personal pride and joy)
that replaced The Door I Loved to Hate.
- New red oak floors have been laid, stained and
finished in the Living Room, Dining Room, and Sunroom. (I'll have to
watch myself in my stocking feet come winter)
So, as I struggle to put my house back together (so I can start
planning the Great Kitchen Demolition for next year), I look around -
and at this site - and find that I'm getting to the point where most of
the time I almost don't remember how bad it really was when I moved in. Woo hoo!
