There are two particular spots in the house that were modified in
The Great Paneling Project of 1963 where I've struggled to understand the original configuration well enough to make decisions about fixing them.  The horror of a coat closet in the living room is one.  The other is the second floor sleeping porch, where I've stood for hours on end, coffee cup in hand, trying to visualize the house as it was in 1920 or so.  From my attempt at mouse-drawing on the left, you can get a general sense of the layout of this part of the second floor.

There is a doorway leading from the master bedroom out to this space, and the wall between the Cat Room and the porch is covered in evil paneling of the same vintage as the stuff I took down in the first floor sunroom.  The porch side of that wall is sheetrocked.

While standing there with my coffee, I've done a lot of knocking on walls and I'm just about convinced that there must have originally been a doorway between the Cat Room and the porch as well.  But after my adventures in removing paneling on the first floor, I've been hesitant to take the prybar to this stuff until I'm ready to deal with whatever might be discovered behind it.

What were they thinking?
